Sour Horses? Don't sell out, don't quit, and "Do it Again!"
Sour Horses can make your ride so unpleasant you just want to sell out!
To be honest I did not know the reason Deb decided to come to the 5 day clinic with Denise McAnally, (a repeat participant in clinics here at the ranch). I did notice a lot of hesitation and a skepticism about some of the work we were doing the first couple of days, but she did the work anyway.... over and over again. On the third day I noticed her frustration building with her horse, and I felt like she needed to be reminded that the problems did not get this bad overnight and it would not go away that quickly either. We continued repeating the groundwork (morning) and riding exercises (afternoon), some of which we had been doing for the last two days and I imagine she was wondering if it was ever going to get better. Denise, who had been to clinics here before, was encouraging and hardworking as always and it probably helped to keep Deb's spirits up. On day four we started out as on day 3 with groundwork exercises and it looked like Deb and her horse were starting to communicate, and still not entirely convinced she came back after lunch for the riding exercises. I guess it was around 3 or 4 o'clock that afternoon while instructing Deb to do yet another repetition of an exercise, i saw something... a smile. I still did not realize how important it was, but I was glad she was beginning to have fun. After 4 days of concentrated training, wondering if her horse was ever going to get better, it happened.
